The Achilles Tang is one of most difficult tangs to keep, it is considered an expert only fish The Achilles Tang is also known as the Red-tailed Surgeon, or Achilles Surgeonfish Its coloration is considered dark brown but most people would say black, it has bright streaks of white and orange around the dorsal, caudal, and anal fins A adult Achilles Tang has a white tear drop near its gills this makes the fish one of the most stunning of the Tang Family, however a juvenile has not got this marking.

Requirements

A large tank needs to be considered when purchasing any Tang, for the Achilles Tang a 490 litre tank is required when purchasing this fish

Most people buy a young Tang keep it until its too big then trade it in for a smaller one, however because of the level of difficulty with this fish many aquarists have a large display tank for the fish Its aggressive towards tangs and surgeon fish but peaceful around other fish The Achilles Tang should be kept at 22-25 C.

Feeding

Many Tangs will accept Meaty foods, but they are mostly herbivore meaning plant based foods

They should be offered Dried Seaweed and Algae You can use a veggie clip (most Marine fish stores sell these) to clip the Seaweed onto the glass, the tang will then graze upon the food once he realises its food, he should be offered this 3x per week.

Other Info

If the tang is not eating the offered food add some garlic sold by LFS (local fish stores) this will trigger a feeding response and also improves there immunity system
